PAINTING: The Count Vladimir Church in Irkutsk. 2012. By Veronika Lobareva
IRKUTSK is a 351 year old Russian Siberian city. In 1652, Ivan Pokhabov built a zimovye (winter quarters) near the site of Irkutsk for gold trading and for the collection of fur taxes from the Buryats. In 1661, Yakov Pokhabov built an ostrog nearby.
Most of the tourists use Irkutsk as a stop over destination on their way to lake Baikal. This is good, nothing wrong about it. The wrong thing is that tourists do not pay as much attention to it as a City. It deserves minimum 1 full day of your time or better 2 full days.
Cheap places to stay in Irkutsk get booked out quickly in summer. Please consider booking in advance at least for 1 night.
